This work is more than a book. It is a record of service, sacrifice, leadership, and community impact. Through the story of the land, the leaders, and the legacy, Doris honors the people and faith foundation that helped shape generations.
Doris Gray Brown is a retired Assistant Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health, Office of Public Health, where she provided executive leadership for more than 55 public health programs, 1,200 employees, and a multi-billion-dollar budget. Her public health career includes historic leadership roles, including serving as the first African American Chief Public Health Nurse and the first African American to lead Public Health Preparedness in Louisiana.
A recognized leader in nursing and emergency preparedness, Doris has served as a Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow and was inducted into the Louisiana State Nurses Association Nursing Hall of Fame. Her expertise includes public health, emergency preparedness, policy development, legislative affairs, fiscal management, leadership development, and community health.

For more than 40 years, she has used her gifts in healthcare, public health, nursing, leadership, and advocacy to strengthen systems and serve people. Her work has touched communities across Louisiana through her executive leadership with the Louisiana Department of Health, Office of Public Health, where she helped lead more than 55 public health programs, 1,200 employees, and statewide initiatives that advanced health, emergency preparedness, and community well-being.
Her reach also extends deeply through organizations such as Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc., Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the NAACP, NCNW, the Delta Research and Educational Foundation, and the Franchell Boswell Educational Foundation. Through these spaces, Doris has served locally, regionally, and nationally as a mentor, advocate, board leader, health strategist, and servant leader committed to education, health equity, scholarship, civic engagement, and community advancement. Her legacy is not only measured by what she has accomplished, but by the people she has poured into, the organizations she has strengthened, and the generations she continues to inspire.
